The Orwell Corinthian- the gaffer with Attitude
|

|
|

|
The design originated in 1898 for the Orwell Corinthian
Yacht Club to provide an easily handled boat which did not require paid
crews. By 1907, there were 10 on the Orwell and 6 on the Crouch, who
regularly used to sail against each other. By 1996, only “Raffles”
remained in sailing order, and a mould was taken from “May” to form
the basis for this thoroughbred boat. |
 | High-performance Gaffer - winner OGA East Coast Race 1999 & 2000
(nearly!), 3rd Aldeburgh Regatta 1999, winner Yogaff 2000 and 2001 |
 | Versatile - intended for racing, but could be used for the odd
picnic |
 | Low Maintenance - GRP hull and deck |
 | Responsive and well balanced |
 | One Design Hull - to keep costs this side of the stratosphere |
 | Development Rig - to allow gaff rig to realise its potential |
 | Trailable on unbraked trailer - and short spars for easy towing |
 | Lifting fin/bulb to allow easy trailing and half-tide mooring |
 | Built- in buoyancy - fully self righting |
 | Easily reefed |
 | Stowage for more sandwiches than you could possibly eat |
 | Outboard possible, but not really necessary. |
|
| Interest has already been shown at the Royal Harwich Yacht
Club, Aldeburgh Yacht Club and Deben Yacht Club. The development boat for
this class - the “First of May” - is available at Woolverstone,
Suffolk for trial sails. If you would like to try her out, and perhaps
become associated with the development of this exciting new class, please
